Cameron Mackintosh’s legendary production of Boublil and Schonberg’s Les Misérables has become the world’s longest running musical. The story of Les Miserables is set against the backdrop social and political struggles of 19th century France. The international award-winning musical is an epic saga of passion and destruction. The show made its debut at the Barbican Centre in October 1985. Les Miserables features some chartbusting numbers such as On My Own, One Day More and Do You Hear The People Sing? The show has been enjoyed by more than 70 million people worldwide in 45 countries and in 22 languages. The spectacular London musical is enthralling audiences since 1986.
The Queen’s Theatre is one of the most popular London West End theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue. In the year 1907, the theatre made its debut as a twin to the neighbouring Hicks Theatre (now renamed as the Gielgud Theatre). W G R Sprague designed the Queen’s and the Gielgud. The theatre was originally going to be stated as the Central Theatre. The theatre was eventually stated as the Queens Theatre.
Due to direct hit by a bomb in September 1940, the façade and lobby of the theatre were destroyed. For almost two decades, the theatre remained closed and underwent refurbishment with modernised exterior. The auditorium remained as Edwardian décor. In the year 1959, theatre was reconstructed in July 1959 with John Gielgud’s solo performance in Shakespeare speeches and sonnets, Ages of Man.
Palace theatre hosted the show for almost 18 years and transferred to the Queen’s Theatre in the year 2004. On 8th October, the musical celebrated its 20th anniversary at the venue and went on becoming the longest running musical of all time.
